In France – Anti-Jewish demonstrations sweep Nantes, Bordeaux, Marseille and Besançon. Many synagogues and Jewish shops are sacked to the shouts of "Death to the Jews" and "La France aux Français" (France for the French).

April 25: In the United States – The US declares war on Spain.
The Philippino fight for independence, against Spanish and then against American subjugation, lasted from c.1898 to 1902. In the latter phase American forces are estimated to have killed more than 200,000 Philippino civilians (some estimates put the number over one million) in an attempt to subjugate the Philippines to American military rule.

November 13: In the Philippines – The First Philippine Republic is established by an elected Congress but is not recognised by the United States. (March 23, 1901, American forces capture the Philippine president in Palanan, Isabela, which effectively dissolves the First Philippine Republic).
 
   
December 10: In Paris, France – The peace treaty between the USA and Spain is signed, by which Spain relinquishes Cuba, cedes Puerto Rico and one of the Mariana Islands to the United States, and that the United States will hold Manila until the disposition of the Philippines had been determined.

In Germany – Adoptive German, HOUSTON STEWART CHAMBERLAIN, in his 'Foundations of the Nineteenth Century' sketches vague terrifying visions of islands of civilization inhabited by pure-blooded Aryans, around whom swirl a racial chaos.

In America – The Alumni Association of the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City, USA, is formed, which in 1940 becomes the 'Rabbinical Assembly of America', the rabbinic arm of the United Synagogue of America (a federation of some 800 Conservative congregations, formed in 1913).
 
Nazi Ideology Develops

Germany – Industrialist ALFRED KRUPP sponsors an essay contest for the best essay on the subject of –
"What can we learn from the principles of Darwinism for application to Inner Political development and the laws of the state?".
Thus, helping to create the climate and motivation for future Nazi racist ideology. Wilhelm Schallmeyer wins first prize, interpreting culture society, morality, and 'right' and 'wrong' in terms of the struggle for survival. Dr. Alfred Ploetz, endorses his essay and supports the superiority of the Caucasian race from which, of course he excepted the Jews' while the Aryans are claimed as the apex of racial perfection. He suggests that in times of war in order to preserve the race, only racially inferior persons should be sent to the front. As the soldiers in the front lines are usually the ones who are killed, this would preserve the purer part of the race from being unnecessarily weakened. He further suggests that a panel of Doctors be present at the birth of each child to judge whether the child was fit enough to live, and, if not, kill it.

October: In the USA – MARK TWAIN (Samuel Langhorne Clemens), vice-chairman of the Anti-Imperialist League of New York, writes in the New York Herald concerning the American war in the Philippines –
"I have seen that we do not intend to free, but to subjugate, the people of the Philippines. We have gone there to conquer, not to redeem. And so I am an anti-imperialist. I am opposed to having the eagle put its talons on any other land." (emphasis mine)

South Africa – British Concentration Camps in the Anglo-Boer War now contain 104,189 women, children and old men in the Transvaal and Orange Free State, the two Afrikaner republics attacked by Britain in its attempt to control the Southern Africa region. Although presented by Britain as 'voluntary refugee camps' they contained imprisoned Afrikaner (Boer) rural families whom the authorities believed may have relatives fighting the guerrilla war against British occupation and the burning of their farms.
British journalist, WT STEAD writes –
"Every one of these children who died as a result of the halving of their rations, thereby exerting pressure onto their family still on the battle-field, was purposefully murdered. The system of half rations stands exposed and stark and unshamefully as a cold-blooded deed of state policy employed with the purpose of ensuring the surrender of people whom we were not able to defeat on the battlefield." (empasis mine)
The outbreak of disease and epidemics among prisoners in these camps appears to be promoted by the lack of sanitary facilities: the Bloemfontein concentration camp has only 13 toilets for more than 3,500 people; the Aliwal North camp has one toilet for every 170 people.

Britain – British Liberal Party politician, DAVID LLOYD GEORGE, states:
"The fatality rate of our soldiers on the [South African] battlefields, who were exposed to all the risks of war, was 52 per thousand per year, while the fatalities of women and children in the [concentration] camps were 450 per thousand per year. We have no right to put women and children into such a position."

June 17: In London, Britain – In reply to questions in the House of Commons, Mr Broderick, Secretary for War, states officially that –
...there are 40,220 persons in British concentration camps of the Transvaal and Orange River Colony [in South Africa]. The deaths in these camps for the month of May numbers ninety-eight men and women, and 318 children. (416 deaths in one month, officially).

THEODOR HERZL publishes his novel Altneuland (Old-New Land), set 20 years in the future, in which he describes in detail the working of a liberal democratic Jewish state which includes a contented Palestinian Arab population.

May 5: In the USA – The New York Journal publishes a cartoon of the infamous command by US General Jacob H. Smith to US troops in the Philippines –
"Kill every one over ten".
In its cartoon the Old Glory drapes an American shield on which a vulture replaces the bald eagle and its caption reads: "Criminals because they were born ten years before we [the US] took the Philippines."

In the Philippines – During its 3-year war which now ends, U.S. attacks into the countryside often included scorched earth campaigns where entire villages were burned and destroyed, torture (water-cure / now called 'water-boarding') and the concentration of civilians into "protected zones" (concentration camps). Many of the civilian casualties also resulted from disease and famine; and 'reports' of the execution of U.S. soldiers taken prisoner led to savage reprisals by American forces executing prisoners. Many American officers and soldiers called the war a "nigger killing business" exposing an essentially racist attitude.
 
In 1946 the United States gives the Philippines independence through the Treaty of Manila.

Graz, Austria – Jewish Pharmacologist OTTO LOEWI (1873–1961), who discovered acetylcholine, is appointed to the university of Graz.
(Loewi's position at Graz University contradicts the argument against Hitler's Jewish ancestry which claims there were no Jews in Graz at this time. He is awarded Austrian citizenship in 1905. On March 11, 1938, he is arrested, along with two of his sons, the night of the German invasion of Austria, but is released on condition that he "voluntarily" relinquish all his possessions to the Nazis. Loewi moves to the United States in 1940, where he becomes research professor at the New York University College of Medicine).
Graz is the town where Hitler's father was conceived, while his paternal grandmother was in the employ of the Jewish Frankenberger family.

2: Off the coast of Colombia, South America – The United States Navy is sent to block its sea lanes to help and encourage the rebels of Colombia's Province of Panama to fight for independance by preventing possible Colombian troop movements en route to put down the rebellion, in order for the US to then gain control of Panama for canal purposes.

In German South West Africa – A genocide of the Herero people is ordered by Germany. Officially the Herero nation is told to vacant their fertile agricultural land immediately (to make way for German settlers) but the wells and watering holes along their only retreat route to Botswana are poisoned. Nearly 100,000 people are subsequently massacred by German troops and settlers. (source: Prof. Jeremy J. Sarkin).

German General Lothar von Trotha gave the order to kill any Herero, armed or not, found within the limits of German colonial territory, known now as Namibia. June 28, Sunday:* in Sarajevo, Bosnia – Archduke FRANZ-FERDINAND (heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne) and his wife SOPHIE (Duchess of Hohenberg), visiting this most rebellious province of the empire by invitation, are both shot dead by 19-year-old GAVRILO PRINCIP of the (later called) 'Young Bosnia' movement of nationalist Serbs.
The first (Nedeljko Cabrinovic) of six Serb pre-arranged assassins throws a hand-grenade at the royal car in Appel Quay but it bounces into the street wounding 20. Later after a formal royal meeting with the Mayor of Sarajevo, the route is now changed (for security reasons) by General OSKAR POTIOREK to return along the same route, where GAVRILO PRINCIP is waiting with his .38 Browning revolver.
After the assassination, anti-Serb rioting breaks out in Sarajevo and various other places within Austria-Hungary until order is restored by the military.

St. Vitus Day, the day on which Serb nobleman Milos Obilic assassinated the sultan of the Ottoman Turks who had conquered Serbia in 1389.
 
Gavrilo Princip is arrested, imprisoned at Theresienstadt (north of Prague), died of Tuberculosis 28 April, 1918, and buried in secret. A Czech soldier, who was part of the burial party, recorded the location, and in 1920 Princip was reinterred as a Serb hero in Sarajevo at St. Mark's Cemetary.
   
July 23: Austria issues an ultimatum/'demarche' to the Serbian government, requiring that it –
•  suppress all publications which "incite hatred and contempt of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy" and are "directed against its territorial integrity";
•  dissolve the Serbian nationalist organisation "Narodna Odbrana" ("The People's Defense") and all other such societies in Serbia;
•  eliminate without delay from schoolbooks and public documents all "propaganda against Austria-Hungary";
•  remove from the Serbian military and civil administration all officers and functionaries whose names the Austro-Hungarian Government will provide;
•  accept in Serbia "representatives of the Austro-Hungarian Government" for the "suppression of subversive movements";
•  bring to trial all accessories to the Archduke's assassination and allow "Austro-Hungarian delegates" (law enforcement officers) to take part in the investigations;
•  arrest Major Voija Tankositch and civil servant Milan Ciganovitch who were named as participants in the assassination plot;
•  cease the cooperation of the Serbian authorities in the "traffic in arms and explosives across the frontier";
•  dismiss and punish the officials of the at Shabatz Loznica frontier service, "guilty of having assisted the perpetrators of the Serajevo crime";
•  provide "explanations" to the Austro-Hungarian Government regarding "Serbian officials" who have expressed themselves in interviews "in terms of hostility to the Austro-Hungarian Government"; and
•  notify the Austro-Hungarian Government "without delay" of the execution of the measures comprised in the ultimatum.
The Austro-Hungarian Government expects the reply of the Serbian Government at the latest by 5 o'clock on Saturday evening the 25th of July 1914.
Russia's Czar NICHOLAS II moves to aid his threatened fellow Slavs in Serbia, triggering an alignment of European powers concerning the conflicting positions.
In
Paris, France – Over half the Jewish population of the city are non-citizens as a result of immigration (mostly from Poland). Jewish immigrant communities are Yiddish speaking Ashkenazim (mostly), and also Ladino (Spanish-Jewish) or Chuadit (Portugese-Jewish) Sephardim, live in the Pletzel (the third and fourth districts of the city), and are generally more radical politically than French Jews.

Palestine – The Jewish population has grown to c.90,000, of which 13,000 are settlers living in 43 agricultural settlements.

4-13: In the Meuse-Meurthe area of Lorraine, France – The German Sixth Army attacks, and Kaiser Wilhelm II arrives in his Royal Train to observe the German attack and to attend a victory parade in the 'captured city' of Nancy but it fails. Pont-à-Mousson and Lunéville are reoccupied by the French and Nancy is securely held in French territory for the duration of the war.
   
5-8: In France – The French Armies and the British First Army carry out counter-attacks against the German advance on a line of approximately 100 miles from Compiègne east of Paris to Verdun. (9 September the German First Army begins to pull back as the British First Army moves in on its left flank, and with no option but to make a fighting withdrawal, all the German forces in the Marne river region retreat in a northerly direction, crossing the Aisne to the high ground of the Chemin des Dames ridge).

In France – Trench Warfare begins along Front Lines consisting of trenches, wire defences, mined dugouts, deep bunkers, reinforced concrete emplacements and selected strongpoints (usually a reinforced farm), in an Intermediate, Second and Third defensive lines along a distance of about 450 miles, forming a mainly continous line of trenches between the allies forces of Belgium, France, Great Britain, the Dominion Forces of the British Empire (Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Newfoundland and South Africa), Portugal and the United States (only from April 1918), until August 1918.

1915
In
Palestine – IZTHAK BEN-ZVI is exiled by the Turks and travels to the USA where, with DAVID BEN-GURION, he founds the Jewish Legion to fight with Britain against Germany and Turkey in Palestine.
  In Egypt – Under British Captain TRUMPLDOR, refugees from Palestine are organized as the Zion Mule Corps to fight the Turks, under the Mogen David blue and white ensign.
April
2: In Germany – FRITZ HABER, the head of Berlin's Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Physical Chemistry, develops the use of Chlorine gas as a chemical weapon to be used in warfare.
About three weeks later, German troops use chlorine gas for the first time on a mass scale during combat on their Western Front near the Flemish city of
Ypres in Belgium, deploying a total of 150 tons of the chemical.
At first, French soldiers thought the shimmering cloud was intended as a diversionary tactic. As many as 1,200 of them were killed and about 3,000 wounded. HABER observes the event from a safe distance.

November 22: In the UK – A lead article in British newspaper 'Manchester Guardian' states that Palestine must be created as a Jewish Nation to act as a 'buffer state' to protect Egypt and the Suez Canal against Turkish aggression, and concludes –
"...on the realization of that condition depends the whole future of the British Empire as a sea empire."

the Ottoman Empire – The genocide of Armenians takes place in which an estimated 1 to 1½ million people are massacred.
(In 2014
the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan offers unprecedented condolences to the Armenian people in a statement published on his official website Wednesday 23 April:
"'It is with this hope and belief that we wish that the Armenians who lost their lives in the context of the early 20th century rest in peace,
and we convey our condolences to their grandchildren."
This statement is issued a day before the 99th anniversary of the Armenian atrocity. Armenia and Turkey have different views on the mass deaths of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire during World War I, which Armenians consider a genocide, while Turkey clams the killings should be understood in the context of the war. In "the context of the early 20th century" avoids national responsibility for the genocide, which the US also still does not recognise as such)

16: The Foreign Secretary of the German Empire, ARTHUR ZIMMERMANN, sends a telegram to the German ambassador to Mexico, Heinrich von Eckardt, instructing him that if the U.S. appears certain to enter the war, he is to approach the Mexican Government with a proposal for a US military alliance with Germany, with funding from Germany. Mexico is promised recovery of lost territories in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, and ambassador Eckardt is also instructed to urge Mexico to help broker an alliance between Germany and Japan.

May: In Munich, Germany – Reichswehr troops and right-wing militias occupy the Bavarian capital. Hundreds of sympathizers with the Soviet Republic are indiscriminately murdered. A wave of persecution grips all of Munich.
ADOLF HITLER, who had opposed the socialist revolution, is now given the position of Investigative Commissioner in his regiment. As a former soldiers' council member, he is very familiar with the battalion, helps compile lists of names, and investigates soldiers who had allegedly been in league with the Red Army.

June 22: in the UK – The London Gazette publishes the Military Cross citation of Canadian-born Captain WILLIAM STEPHENSON born Stanger (Ian Fleming's later primary model for his 'James Bond') which reads –
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When flying low and observing an open staff car on a road, he attacked it with such success that later it was seen lying in the ditch upside down. During the same flight he caused a stampede amongst some enemy transport horses on a road. Previous to this he had destroyed a hostile scout and a two-seater plane. His work has been of the highest order, and he has shown the greatest courage and energy in engaging every kind of target.'

June 28: In France – The signing of the Treaty of Versailles peace agreement which officially ends World War I, but lays the foundation for the next European conflagration. Following the Treaty of Versailles, Germany has to send massive amounts of money, materiel, raw materials and industrial machinery to France.
 
 
July: In Germany – HITLER's regiment sends him to an anti-Bolshevik training course held by the "Information and Propaganda Division" of the Bavarian Reichswehr Command. Karl Mayr, an anti-Semite, is head of the division and although the lectures Hitler attends have harmless-sounding titles such as "Education and Politics" and "The Development of German Economic Life Since 1871", the lecturers were themselves anti-Semites, anti-Bolsheviks, and hostile to the Weimar Republic.
 
 
August: In Germany – In the Lechfeld transit camp ADOLF HITLER, now an openly radical right-wing propagandist, gives talks to fellow soldiers who had returned from war captivity "contaminated with Bolshevik and Spartacist ideas."
HITLER writes political pamphlets on subjects such as the 'settlement question', as well as a letter in which he agitates against Judaism, which is "absolutely a race and not a religious community".
He calls for an anti-Semitism that had to lead to –
"the methodical legal control and elimination of the prerogatives of the Jew." (emphasis mine).

Britain accepts the Mandate for Iraq from the League of Nations, combining the Ottoman provinces of Basra, Baghdad and Mosul, to develop it toward independence.

13: In Germany – HITLER, in a public speech entitled 'Why Are We Antisemites' declares that healthy elements of a nation know that –
"criminals guilty of crimes against the nation, i.e., parasites on the national community," cannot be tolerated, that under certain circumstances they must be punished only with death, since imprisonment lacks the quality of irrevocableness. "The heaviest bolt is not heavy enough and the securest prison is not secure enough that a few million could not in the end open it. Only one bolt cannot be opened – and that is death."
26: In France – LOUIS DARQUIER (DE PELLEPOIX) explains in his publication La Vieille France that –
"It is not rats, it is Jews imported en masse by the Alliance who are infecting Paris with bubonic plague, typhus, cholera."

Saturday 24: In Grunewald, Berlin, Germany – The Foreign Minister of Germany's Weimar Republic, Jewish WALTHER RATHENAU, is assassinated by Erwin Kern (23) and Hermann Fischer (26), both former army officers and members of Germany's right-wing terrorist group Consul. Ernst Werner Techow drove the assassins to their hit. Before this, German nationalists often chanted:
"Shoot dead Walther Rathenau, the goddam Jew pig!"
(The three flee to Saaleck castle (c.200 kilometers south), but they make the mistake of leaving a light on and local residents, aware that the tenant, a far-right sympathizer, is away, alert police. Kern is shot dead during arrest, Fischer shoots himself, and Techow is arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison. The state prosecutor cites 'blind hatred of Jews' as their motive.)

ADOLF HITLER orders a raid on a Jewish printing house by armed Storm Division troops, who, by threat of violence, steal 14.5 billion marks.

Palestine – As no constitutional state in Palestine could be formed, the British government continues direct rule but encourages participation of both Palestinian Arabs and Jews by offering each an 'agency'.
The Jewish community accepts and the Jewish Agency is formed for the purpose of Article 4 of the Palestine Mandate, but Palestinian Arabs refuse.

And that "The prisoner does not smoke or drink and happily accepts all restrictions."

Ramallah, Palestine – NABIHA NASIR starts an elementary school for girls in Birzeit and its surrounding villages. It becomes Birzeit High School in 1932, and Birzeit College in 1942.
It later developes into Birzeit University. (The university's president, Hanna Nasser, was deported by Israel in 1974 and only allowed to return with the beginning of the peace process in 1993).

August: In Palestine – Britain grants Jewish MOSHE NOVOMEYSKY a 75-year concession to his Palestine Potash Company (מפעלי ים המלח‎), after he provides documentation of his funding and accepts that the company be run by a Briton. The company's board of directors and marketing departments are to be located in London, their management and research laboratories in Jerusalem, the primary production facility on the northern shore of the Dead Sea, and experimental production at the Mount Sodom site.
In 1951, the company is nationalized by the Israeli government under its Ministry of Development. In 1953, it is renamed the Dead Sea Works (Mifalei Yam HaMelakh).
   
Friday 16: An officially approved Muslim militant demonstration in Jerusalem burns Jewish religious books.
Muslim agitators begin touring Palestine on behalf of the Jerusalem Mufti, Amin al-Husayni (al-HUSSEINI), calling for action against Jews on the 23rd of this month.
The Government of Palestine orders the disarming of Jews to prevent reprisals and establishes a commission of enquiry under Sir WALTER SHAW.
   
Friday 23: Attacks on Jews in Palestine escalate to massacres in Mea Shearim and the Georgian Quarters of Jerusalem and in other areas such as Hebron and Safed over the next eight days.
  In
Jerusalem – In the village of Silwan, Palestinian Arab families protect Jews. The Jews of Silwan later write a letter of gratitude for their protection during this time –
“We, the undersigned, the residents of the Shiloah village, openly declare that we must express our gratitude to the dear and pure-hearted man, the honorable Haj Muhammad Ghozlan, one of our respectable Arab brothers, residents of the Shiloah-Silwan village, and his kind friends, who showed exceptional compassion and benevolence to their neighbours, the Jewish residents of the Shiloah village, during the days of the 1929 riots, and did not allow the bands of rioters to hurt us…"
  In
Hebron – In the face of official indifference to their plight, some Jews are saved by friendly local Palestinian Arab families.
   
Saturday 24: In Palestine – Acting High Commissioner LUKE orders the disarming of all Jewish special constables.
  In
Jerusalem – JUDAH LEON MAGNES, Chancellor of the Hebrew University, calls for a bi-national solution to Palestine.
   
MAGNES dedicates the rest of his life to reconciliation with Palestinian Arabs, and particularly objects to the concept of a specifically Jewish state, so that Palestine may be a binational-state in which equal rights would be shared by all.

Germany – ADOLF HITLER declares –
"If Germany were to have a birth rate of a million children a year, and put away seven or eight hundred thousand of the weakest [70-80%], then the end result might even be a net increment in strength"
– concerning his Darwinian social-engineering program of which eventually the Jews bear the brunt. (See Galton 1871).

  In
Tiberias, Palestine – A joint proclamation is signed by the Jewish and Arab communities, in response to the mutual violence in other areas, declaring peace and friendship in Arabic and Hebrew. The Arabic versions read in part
"In the name of Allah the Merciful... We have assembled with the notables of the Jewish community in the house of his Eminence the Great Mufti, Sheikh Abd al-Selim Effendi Tabri, and have taken counsel on the preservation of peace and order. We have resolved that both sides shall urge and warn their respective communities to maintain peace and quiet. We therefore proclaim that we vehemently oppose every action which disturbs the peace of the population, and we pray to God the Omnipotent to inspire us with His will. We warn our brothers that they must maintain the peace and go about their work, for that alone is useful. Let them keep far from ways which are illegal and are not desired by the community. Let them keep far from quarrels, for Allah detests the quarrelsome..."
In Jerusalem, Palestine – JUDAH MAGNES, Chancellor of the Hebrew University states –
"if we cannot find ways of peace and understanding, if the only way of establishing the Jewish National Home is upon the bayonets of some Empire, our whole enterprise is not worthwhile, and it is better that the Eternal People that has outlived many a mighty empire should possess its soul in patience ...It is one of the great civilizing tasks before the Jewish people to enter the promised land, not in the Joshua way, but bringing peace and culture, hard work and sacrifice and love, and a determination to do nothing that cannot be justified before the conscience of the world." (emphasis mine).
  In
Berlin, Germany – JOSEPH GOEBBELS, a career official with the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP), or Nazi Party announces that the Jew is a "negative aspect" which must be "eradicated": Jews simultaneously embody capitalism, communism, the press and the police. His slogan is "The Jews are to blame!"

"It would have seemed more sensible to me to establish a Jewish homeland on a less historically burdened land.   In
the USA – After 1929, HENRY FORD, provides the essential finance to carry the early Nazi Party through its most difficult years.
FORD also writes a damning anti-Jewish book which later fuels Neo-Nazi ('Aryan Nation') and other anti-Semitic groups (Islamic terrorists) at the end of the 20th century.
  In
FranceFRANÇOIS COTY's anti-Jewish daily newspaper L'Ami du Peuple claims a readership of one million.

South Africa – The Quota Law is passed to curtail the immigration of East European Jews into South Africa as being in-assimilable.

Palestine – HAIM [CHAIM] MARGALIUT[MARGOLIS]-KALVARYSKI (Director of Jewish Colonies [as per his unclaimed Greek insurance policy, and living in Nazareth, Turquie D'Asie] and head of the Joint Bureau of Jewish Public Bodies formed to coordinate relations with the Arabs following the 1929 Palestine riots) submits a proposal to the World Zionist Organization for an agreed covenant between Arabs and Jews of Palestine, which reads –
"The danger to which the Arabs are allegedly exposed as a result of Jewish work is imaginary, not real. The penetration into Semitic countries in general and into Palestine in particular of a Semitic race will result in no danger to the [Palestinian] Arabs. On the contrary, it will contribute to its vigour and to its inherent strength. We Jews shall not thrust ourselves as alien growth upon the body politic of the Arabs, as many extreme nationalists believe, but we shall form a beautiful ring in the chain of the United Arab Confederation. The Arab Confederation does not alarm us."
