Gertrude Stein and her 'wife' Alice Toklas probably escaped persecution through friendship with Bernard Faÿ, a Vichy regime collaborator with connections to the Gestapo. the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario, between Whitby and Oshawa, Canada – WILLIAM STEPHENSON (born Stanger, code-named 'Intrepid') of British Security Coordination (BSC) in New York establishes 'Camp X' (jointly operated by BSC and the Government of Canada) to train under-cover operatives. The camp is originally designed to link Britain and the United States at a time when the US is forbidden by its Neutrality Act to be directly involved in World War II.

This is the first training school for clandestine operations in Canada and North America.
