23° centigrade is the average Sargasso Sea temperature over the last three thousand years ending in 1975, as determined by isotope ratios of marine organism remains in sediment at the bottom of the sea.
 
 
The Medieval Climate Optimum and the Little Ice Age shown on the above graph were naturally occurring extended intervals of climate departures from the average or mean.
 
  Conclusion – we have quite some way to go to match the past.
