The Hidden Time of God THE UNIQUE STRATEGY OF GOD IN HUMAN HISTORY — COMPLETELY HIDDEN PRIOR TO APRIL 30 AD |
![]() |
Influenced by the hindsight of history, in the light of the New Testament revelation,
we today read our Old Testament very differently from those to whom it was first given. |
Accordingly we frequently fail to grasp the strategic character of cryptic prophecies, and the importance of deliberate omissions in the prophetic time-frame given to Israel to focus their expectation on God’s coming Messiah and His kingdom without end. |
Consequently | many, such as Seventh-day Adventists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, etc, have sincerely misled God’s people by using these Old Testament prophecies to estimate the time of the Return of Christ and so have consistently been shown to be deceivers, no matter how sincere. |
To properly understand Biblical prophecy it is therefore vitally important to grasp the following about God's Hidden Time as laid out below. |
Others, | knowing the incredible inspiration of the Old Testament prophecies about this coming of the Kingdom, have defined this hidden aspect as simply being a short-coming or deficiency in the Old Covenant prophetic perspective (like fore-shorting in a photographic perspective), as if the coming of Messiah was seeing two mountains in the distance without seeing the intervening valley between (the Church Age), and so the first and second coming of Israel's Messiah were 'mistakenly' blended by the prophets and seen as one event in history. In other words, Old Testament prophetic perspective was simply deficient, inadequate. This is certainly not so! |
The New | Testament makes it very clear that this Hidden Time, the time between the first coming of Christ and His end-time return in glory (the present so-called Church Age), was deliberately hidden from all previous generations, including even all angelic beings and so took Satan completely unawares concerning the Atonement event. For that reason Satan entered into Judas Iscariot to get the Christ crucified, mistakenly thinking this would therefore defeat God's plan (Luke 22:3).
Now, as necessary background – |
A. | THE HIDDEN TIME | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The prophet | Daniel had given Israel two reference points to know when God’s kingdom would come to them under His Messiah (but which, unknown to him, strategically hid the division between Messiah’s first and second coming): the sequence and character of an imperial rule over Palestine; and the actual number of years to count-down to the Messiah/Christ. |
• | So firstly, the kingdom of God over Israel was to begin under His Messiah by ending the rule of the Roman Empire. |
• | And secondly, the announcement of 490-years gave Israel a detailed count-down to the coming of this kingdom of God. |
The truth | of this is attested by Christ's grief-filled words when He specially entered Jerusalem upon the unbroken colt of a donkey at the end of His 3½-year-ministry among them (in fulfilment of Zechariah's arrival-sign to Israel of their messianic king, 9:9) – |
"Would that you, even you [Jerusalem/Israel], had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation." |
Luke 19:42-44 ESV. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Now with | hind-sight and the New Testament's special perspective, we should know that Christ’s 3½-year ministry to Israel completed the first half of its final-seven-years of these 490 (in confirming God's covenant by Christ and His Twelve), but which then failed to continue on to its full completion because of Israel's official rejection of Christ's gospel demonstrated in His crucifixion in that same week and confirmed by their stoning of Stephen after his inspired testimony to their Sanhedrin. |
Only | after the Spirit was given to the people of Christ on the Day of Pentecost, did it later begin to be understood that this final seven years had been split by a time previously hidden from all prophets and angels – completely hidden, even from God's prophet John the Baptist (Matt.3:11-12; 11:2-3) whom Jesus had called the greatest of them. |
This | prophecy to Daniel is thus beautifully vague to cover its double meaning, for in the previous verse it has mentioned the coming of Messiah and also the coming of a ruler whose people would destroy the sanctuary. |
With Dual Significance (as with Isaiah's Virgin) |
"...And in the middle of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease..." | Daniel:9:27 LITV.
The atoning | act-of-God in Christ (when He was cut off from the Father in becoming sin for us, 2Cor.5:21) ended forever the connection between animal blood and sin atonement ('to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity'). |
But | this act, in the middle of the final seven-years of the 490-years should also have led directly into the remainder of the seven, which begins with sacrilege in this sanctuary, just as Jesus foretold in this week of His death at the end of the first half of this Seven.
It did not happen then for the Hidden Time began as a consequence of Israel's final obstinate unbelief which God had prepared for – to 'turn the tables' on the enemy of God and all mankind. |
This | present Hidden Time will come to an end in the future and final 3½-years of this 490-years, when the direct presence of the Christ is fulfilled in His Body – completing His ministry at a global level as the ultimate 'Elijah' of God to precipitate Christ's return (See the clue at the end below). For this reason, when His disciples asked for the sign of His return, He described a sacrilege of the sanctuary which begins the ultimate time of trouble (Matthew 24:15). |

Associated with the historical preparation for this unique Hidden Time are special prophecies which had needed to be hidden until after their fulfilment or the Hidden Time would no longer have been hidden.
B. | THE HIDDEN PROPHECIES |
There | were several significant prophecies regarding Israel's Messiah which were deliberately hidden within the text of Holy Scripture and were only to be understood after the Spirit had been given. There are a number of these concerning Israel's Messiah, but the following two illustrate this special strategy of God in history. |
• | Home Town of Messiah – Isaiah 11:1.
"There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a Branch [nêtser, נצר] from his roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD." |
Isaiah 1:1-2. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hidden | in this word 'Branch', otherwise completely ignored in the Old Testament, but referred to in the New Testament in Matthew 2:23 – is the city/town of Netzer, Nazareth, for the Messiah would be called a Nazarene. The cryptic nature of this prophecy importantly ensured that, when the Christ-child returned from Egypt and a new Herod even more cruel than his father now ruled, Jesus would have an ordinary human upbringing in this small Galilean village without the danger of another 'Bethlehem massacre' that had provoked the prophecy of Jeremiah 31:15.. |
• | Atoning Death of Messiah – Isaiah 53.
Two streams of Old Testament prophecy were kept completely separate. These were Messiah, under the title 'Son of God' (which has nothing to do with the deity of Christ), and the totally different detail about a Suffering Servant of God, never brought together so as to ensure that the substitutionary atonement by Messiah Himself would not be understood until after the event. This is why in ignorance Satan chose to enter into Judas Iscariot in order to get the Messiah crucified (Lk.22:3), being completely unaware of this hidden strategy of God's grace.. |
The following contrasting quotes may help to understand this carefully maintained total separation of the two distinct themes in Old Testament prophecy. |
So He was thought to be – |
To | reinforce this distinction/separation between the two themes, the text of Isaiah 49 also personified the nation Israel as God's servant, so the suffering-prophecy was understandably understood as being either Israel or sometimes Isaiah the prophet, but we know now that its fulfilment was ultimately Christ Jesus, which understanding is declared throughout the whole New Testament. |
These two themes were brought together for the very first time in the personal words of God the Father to the Lord Jesus Christ (heard by Him alone) after His water baptism under John's ministry in confirmation to Him of His messianic calling. |
“And a voice came from Heaven, '[1] You are My beloved Son; [2] with you I am well pleased'.” | Mark 1:11
The | first part of this declaration of God to Christ ('My beloved Son') is drawn from the theme of Israel's Messiah as Son of God in Psalm 2:7. |
The | second part of God's statement ('with you I am well pleased') is drawn from Isaiah's prophecy of the Servant of the Lord in 42:1, thus bringing these two separate prophetic themes together for the first time in history and even then only to the personal understanding of the man Jesus of Nazareth. |
Satan did not understand!
This | personal understanding of Christ (after the Christ of Israel had received the Holy Spirit) only became a factor in the understanding of Christ's people after they had also received the same Spirit of God through Jesus Christ their Lord.
C. | NOW MADE KNOWN |
• | As declared to us by the Spirit through Paul in – Romans 16:25-27. |
“Now to Him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith – to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.”
• | As declared to us by the Spirit through Paul in – Ephesians 3:6, 9-10.
“This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. …To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.” | Strategically delayed disclosure of this to all angelic beings, including to Satan himself. |
• | As declared to us by the Spirit through Paul in – Colossians 1:26-27. | The unique characteristic of this Hidden Time is the moral nature of God within the Christian (God's love incarnated) fully revealed.
“the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to His saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
Sadly, within a generation of our New Testament being completed, this strategic understanding was lost as the fruit of spiritual disobedience.
The faithfulness | of the Spirit of God will persist throughout this present Hidden Time with the precious people to whom the Spirit was given at Pentecost – to bring to completion in this world that which God began in Jesus Christ. Praise God! And so the Gospel mission will be fully completed in all the world as it was in Jesus. |
This is accomplished by God through the application of the following two principles – so as to bring His Church into its end-time completing maturity, as was anticipated for us in Holy Scripture given for our instruction. |
See 'UNTIL': Psalm 110:1 & 3; Ephesians 4:13. |
The Lord Jesus Christ taught His disciples:
I am the true Vine, and My Father is the Vinedresser.
[1] Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away, and[2] every branch that does bear fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit." |
John 15:1-2. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
So, the two | basic principles of God for the Christian Church's spiritual growth are: |
THEREFORE |
the Bible says that – |
*See 1 Cor.11:30; and 1 John 5:16. |
this present Hidden Time ends – when the "Accuser of our brothers" no longer has a valid accusation to bring against them before God's Throne – and
Hallelujah! | ⇒ THAT TIME IS COMING! ⇐ | Hallelujah!
"...woe to you, O earth and sea, for the Devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!" | Revelation 12:6, 12, 14.
Praise God! That future time is exactly 3½-years / or 42-months / or 1260-days, and not one minute more! |
